Established in 1989, the Outstanding Alumni Award is presented annually. The award recognizes graduates who have made significant contributions to their profession and who are furthering the health and quality of life for members of the military and/or civilian communities. Award recipients must be an active member of the Alumni Association; however, they do not have to currently working in the field of Physical Therapy. Alumni may be nominated by any active member of the association. Nominations can be submitted anytime but must be submitted NLT 1 May of the year the award will be presented. The award is typically presented each year at the program graduation ceremony at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
The Virginia Metcalf Service Award (VMSA) recognizes Association members who have demonstrated sustained, exceptional service to the organization. COL (Retired) Virginia Metcalf was instrumental in organizing and starting the Alumni Association. Serving as President for over 15 years, she was a driving force in the growth of the Association and was the first recipient of this award in 1999. Her commitment and selfless service are the standard for the award. Any member of the Association, regardless of membership category, is eligible for nomination for the VSMA. The award is typically presented during the annual Alumni Reunion activities.
The purpose of these professional development grants is to assist students with expenses to participate in professional development opportunities if they will not be funded for TDY by the military. Examples of professional development opportunities would include invited research presentations at state or national conferences, participation in service opportunities like APTA/APTA student organizations or humanitarian missions.
